The Neon Museum welcomes its most recent Artist In Residence – acclaimed interdisciplinary artist, Thomas Putzier.

The residency will last six weeks and includes housing courtesy of Juhl, the luxury loft-style condominium community that spans an entire city block in downtown Las Vegas. Known as an enclave for the arts and creativity and located in close proximity to the Arts District, Juhl also sponsors its own artist in residence programs.

“We are honored and thrilled to welcome such esteemed and progressive artists as Thomas Putzier, said Uri Vaknin, an ardent supporter of arts and culture who serves on the board of trustees for The Neon Museum and is a principal with KRE Capital, which owns a large portfolio of condominiums in Las Vegas, including Juhl.

Thomas Putzier Residency at The Neon Museum

As The Neon Museum’s seventh Artist In Residence (AIR7), Putzier will focus his residency project on the role neon signage has played in serving as visual representatives of expression, personality, and leisure. “I plan to explore the way this design iconography has impacted the field of architecture. In my solo show, I will highlight sci-fi futuristic space-age forms and geometry, from the design history of Las Vegas, by collaging their elements into completely new works of art,” he said.

Putzier is well-known for his public engagement projects that are designed to inspire fun, informative, and transformational experiences. He plans to further develop an earlier piece titled “Temple of Agency,” which has incorporated a game show format, penguin performers, and artist-led conversations with a new neon-signage-inspired twist.

Selected from a record number of high-quality and diverse submissions by a dedicated jury team, Putzier will begin his Artist In Residence on January 11, culminating in a solo exhibition and Artist Talk on February 22, 2023.

The Minneapolis-based conceptual artist and designer imagines new worlds to examine relationships between architecture, power, freedom, and control. His works, which have been exhibited in galleries, museums, and sculpture parks, create a universe and mythology that confronts disciplinary and ideological boundaries through architectural design, drawing, painting, performance, sound, and video.

The Neon Museum’s Residency Program

The Neon Museum residency program supports the museum’s mission to cultivate the arts and further cultural enrichment. This residency is supported by The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, the National Endowment for the Arts and Nevada Arts Council, and Laci Cerrone, Las Vegas Gal.

Founded with the mission of collecting, preserving, and exhibiting Las Vegas’ iconic signs, The Neon Museum is a rousing place to visually explore the city’s history. Today, more than 250 signs in the museum’s Neon Boneyard beckon visitors to experience the sizzle of near and distant by-gone eras from the 1930’s through the early 21st century.

The museum also offers numerous educational, outreach, research, and arts preservation opportunities like the monthly family-oriented STEAM Saturdays that offers fun make-and-take activities, hands-on learning, and demonstrations designed to promote creative and critical thinking.
